Day 6 Unity to Augusta
Pulled out of the Copper Heron early after a great night’s sleep and splendid B and B breakfast. There is something about farm fresh eggs and homemade blueberry muffins that gets my motoring going.
Maine roads are in remarkably good shape after a tough winter and with several nice stretches of freshly laid payment, minimal traffic and a full belly made for a very pleasant ride down to Vassalboro and the Natanic Tomahawk Golf Club . This a is beautiful 36 hole layout. Like many north country clubs this a family owned operation built in stages beginning in 1965. The third generation of the Browns family are taking great care of the land their grandfather first developed with a 9 hole layout. Family members are buried on the 18th tee. Pretty neat stuff.
The pro set up me with a couple nice guys and after golf we shared a couple cold brews before a short pedal to the nights lodging at the Senator Inn Augusta. After a quick shower I rode into the neighboring town of Hallowell for quick bite to eat. Chanced upon a couple Maine State Transportation workers who had some great advise for the next day’s ride …..more later. Locals refer to Hallowell as a “ Drinking town with an antiques problem”…very cool town.
