May 5 Day 29
Nags Head in the late fall is basically empty as the summer crowds have moved on and now it is just the locals and the pace slows down. Today’s ride was 72 miles, directly south with the dunes and the beach on the left, the sun directly ahead and surfer dudes taking advantage of a bonus fall day at 75*.The gentle sound of the surf could be heard over the dunes. There was no traffic and no need to rush so BGB took it slow soaking up the sun, stopping for an occasional dip in the Atlantic and chatting up roadside tourists.
Another movie memory , Nights of Rodanthe , as we passed through the sleepy town which played host to the Nicholas Spark novel later made into a movie with Richard Gere and Diane Lane.
Our leisurely pace almost caused us to miss the last ferry departing Hatteras bound for Orcracoke Island. We made it with seconds to spare and settled in for another lovely 1 hour ferry ride.
