May 4 Day 28
Early morning Google Maps sent us on a route that took us directly past the active take off runwayof the base. There were a ½ dozen cars parked and watching as plane after plane took off. A young kid of 10 and his father were among the spectators and this little guy was veritable treasure of information. He identified every plane and its mission as they rose off the tarmac..:…we had an interesting conversation with his old man in the bqckground proudly listening to his little kid blow away this Yankee with his military knowledge.
Me “ Wow.. here comes a big one. What is it “
Kid ” C37 Gulfstream V transport plane headed for the Gulf. There should be an escort coming up soon. There it is FA 18 Super Hornet. Cool. That baby can move”
Me “ Here comes another one…what is it ? “
Kid “ T 45 Goshawk Trainer. They will be doing take offs and landings all morning”
It was a delayed start but a nice way to kick off the day. Ahead lay a leisurely 73 miles crossing over to the Outer Banks and passing through the historical towns of Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil where the Wright Bros first took to the skies in 1903. Orville would have gotten a kick out of the sky action at the base this morning.
